Summary:碩士 === 東吳大學 === 歷史學系 === 101 === The study started from the history and definition of Red Sandalwood and then introduced import of Red Sandalwood and the origin or Red Sandalwood furniture. In the discussion of making the furniture in Qing Court, the study was composed of Manufacture Organizations, Manufacturers, and Manufacture Methods. Lastly, this study also discussed the usage of Red Sandalwood furniture, including religion, daily life and other unique usages in Qing Court. Connecting the process from trading to manufacturing and using, the study hoped to to restore the historical story and the changes of Red Sandalwood. The origin of Red Sandalwood was India. Due to regional trades, it entered to China from Canton Customs. Qianlong’s Imperial Decree ordered the supervisor of Canton Customs to take the Red Sandalwood and Red Sandalwood furniture which were made by Guangdong Artisans and offering tribute. To cater to imperial's pleasure, officers offered a great deal of tribute to increase the amount of Red Sandalwood furniture in the Qing’s palace. Qianlong found Gong Wood Manufacturer, which was the most critical organization to make the Red Sandalwood furniture, in the imperial workshop. Guangdong Artisans had consummate techniques to make the unique Red Sandalwood furniture combined the Western and authentic Chinese styles and these were the representation of Beijing style furniture. Due to the Qianlong’s movement and preference, Red Sandalwood appeared considerably in the Royal Gardens like Forbidden City and Yuanming Yuan as well as Chengde Mountain Resort. The ingenious Red Sandalwood furniture that found in daily life indicated that furniture was using the wide range in Qianlong period. The religious usage could also add solemn and distinguished status of Red Sandalwood. Red Sandalwood was not only the representation of Beijing’s style furniture but also the most brilliant part of Qing’s style furniture. It also showed the characteristic of Qing’s material in different areas. Therefore, it took the leading position of Qing imperial furniture and was the most critical furniture in Qing period.
