《Les Misérables》is an epic social fiction, which Hugo spent the longest time to breed and accomplish. Just as Hugo said when the novel was born, “It is an enormous mirror that honestly reflects the human being from the specific perspective of human's broad lives.” The novel elaborates, at that time, the ruthless war, challenging and cruel life, as well as the inner struggle and alteration among characters; the story plots intricately weave together and inspire every reader.
Even one century after, this remarkable masterpiece continues impresses dramatists Claude Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil; they adapted this epic fiction into a musical theatre, in which the dramatists placed an emphasis on “love” that the main character Fantine presented, therefore, the whole of the adaption was infused with the love. The novel completely introduced Fantine’s life; from a young, little girl became a compassionate mother, Fantine sacrificed her life and everything for her daughter. But, dramatists of the adaption only selected partial story of Fantine that when she became a mother, she sacrificed everything just for her daughter till her life was withered and left the world.
Two dramatists preserved the spirit of Fantine of the original –love. The spirit “love” entirely articulated the theme of the play. The present author will take two of Fantine’s themes「I dreamed a dream」 and 「Come to Me」, apply Fantine’s personality and the time background of the original to well comprehend the inner world of Fantine. By analyzing two music, through interdisciplinary inclusion, the author will in construe the spirit of the role that provided by the music.
