Our studies suggest that unsaturated ketone came from ketoenol condensation from solvent, acetone. The mechanism of synthesized compounds was characterized by X-ray crystallography. Also, a novel photochromic colorant 30 was designed and synthesized. When dissolved in methylene chloride, compound 30 is yellow; it turns purple upon UV irradiation (306 nm). The photogenerated product can revert back to 30 when either being heated or exposed to light with a longer wavelength.
