La courte paille was his last song cycle, containing seven humorous and fantastic songs: 1. Le Sommeil, 2. Quelle aventure! 3. La Reine de coeur, 4. Ba, Be, Bi, Bo, Bu, 5. Les Anges musiciens, 6. La Carafon, 7. Lune d’avril. The lyrics were from “La cage aux grillons” and “Le voleur d’étincelles” by the poet Maurice Caréme. The primary purpose of this thesis is to discuss Poulenc’s La courte paille. This study contains five Chapters: Chapter 1 is an introduction of this study. Chapter 2 is Poulenc’s biography and his compositional style. Chapter 3 is the poet Maurice Carême’s biography, and La courte paille’ s introduction. Chapter 4 is the analysis and interpretation of La courte paille. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this study. I wish to provide performers wish further understanding of Poulenc and La courte paille’s characters and connotations.
