The latest version , DOCSIS 3.0, adds channel bonding mechanism which allows a single cable modem to transmit data on multiple channels at the same time. Therefore, a more flexible, yet more complex, bandwidth allocation algorithm is possible. Such an efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism is needed to consider both time and frequency issues simultaneously. With the development of various multimedia techniques, more and more network applications demand for higher bandwidth and lower delay time. To satisfy the quality of service (QoS) requirement imposed by these applications, DOCSIS defines a variety of service flow scheduling services to provide the satisfactory quality of service for various multimedia network applications. This thesis utilizes the rtPS and UGS service flow scheduling services defined by DOCSIS to design a bandwidth allocation algorithm, aiming to satisfy the QoS requirements of both voice and video stream services. A two dimensional scheduling mechanism which considers both time and frequency at the same time is designed to improve system performance, reduce delay time, and allocate bandwidth fairly and flexibly.
