Description
Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 英文學系碩士班 === 101 === Drawing on Freud, Lacan and Shapiro, this thesis aims to interpret John Fowles''s The Collector placing the focus on the protagonist Clegg''s subjectivity. I intend to analyze how Clegg''s complex background, paranoid collection habits, abnormal sexual behavior, obsessive compulsive disorder, and social phobia distort his personality. Chapter one discusses how Clegg''s background and his imaginary ego lead to his desires of Miranda and the unequal relationships between the two characters. Chapter two explores Clegg''s obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobia and how Freud’s and Shapiro’s theory would explain Clegg''s behavior. Chapter three focuses on the meaning of Clegg''s behavior from the viewpoint of his habit for collecting.
