Summary:碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 音樂學系教學碩士學位班 === 101 === Abstract This study looks at the soundtrack that professional magicians use in their magic shows. The subjects are three Taiwanese magicians that have won the chance to join the FISM, the “Magiclympic” Game which happens every three year in Europe. The study started from the November of 2012 to the June of 2013. The data was collected by means of document analysis, interviews, and observation. Then all the infromation was analyzed, organized, and summarized. “Triangulation” was used to conduct a cross analysis and comparison on the execution of the soundtrack that the three magicians used in their shows. This study is concluded with suggestions as follows: A. The importance of soundtrack for magic show: 1. Soundtrack on stage magic and close-up magic is very important;however, the level of cooperation of music and a stage show is higher than a close-up show. 2. Music, sound effect, and voice-over are closely related to each other and help magician dispersed audience's attention to achieve "misdirection" the unique effect of magic show.Voice-over is another way of sound performance that the magician uses to guide the audience through his performance. 3.The magicians selected high or low music depending on the mood they tried to express; however, depending on the performance venue, a stage magic show uses music with more dramatic volume differences than a close-up magic show. A close-up magic show should be performed in a volume-controlled environment. 4. The magicians decided the tempo of the music depending on the performance procedure, type, and mood of their show. 5. The magicians selected the music volume variation depending the senario they attempted to express; however, depending on the performance venue, a stage magic show uses music with more volume variation than a close-up show. A close-up magic show should be performed in a volume-controlled environment. 6. The magicians selected the timbre that best matches the whole story of the magic tricks. Different timbres can help the audience understand the background story of the show. B. The planning and execution of the soundtrack in a magic show include: 1. Different magicians use performance procedures and design music differently, but their procedure design model is mostly the A-B-A model. 2. The producer, designer, and performer of the soundtrack in a magic show is the magician or a composer that he/she invites. 3. A stage magic show must play music with a theme that can attract the audience and end with similar music that responses to the beginning of the show. A close-up magic show uses voice-over to bring the theme to the audience. 4. A stage magic show and a close-up magic show both use the existing music that is already there; however, the music should be original in a magic competition. 5. The magician selects to fade in or fade out the music or have a clear division between different parts of the music. A close-up magic show has a less complicated music arrangement than a stage magic show. 6. Music, sound effect, and voice-over are used in magic shows to bring the show to the climax. A close-up magic show uses more voice-over and uses less sound effect. 7. The level of cooperation of the music and the performance is higher in a stage magic show than a close-up magic show. 8. Depending on the performance venue, a stage magic show has a wider variety of music environments while a close-up magic show has more emphasis on the interaction with the audience and only uses music as the background effect. C. The magicians provide the following trends and suggection on the use of the soundtrack in magic shows: 1. The functions of the soundtrack in magic shows include: (1) clearly convey the theme of the show; (2) define the physical background of the show; (3) display the connection, climax, and meanings of the story; (4) highlight the emotions of different roles; (5) consolidate the structure of the art itself to make up for the imperfections of the show; (6) strengthen the audience’s memory points of what they have heard and seen in the show; (7) disperse audience's attention with the approach of misdirection. 2. The trend of the soundtrack in a magic show should be the A-B-A model that connects the beginning and the end of the show and displays the transitions and climax of the show. 3. The magicians have the following suggestions on the soundtrack in magic shows: (1) enhance music sensitivity; (2) make music part of the show; (3) practice makes perfect; (4) break through and create something new. According to conlusion, this study provides suggestions on magic shows for future research purposes.
