There were lots of new conservation techniques and materials imported by the related scholars. However, the issues whether those materials and techniques were suitable for the environment in Taiwan were still discussed. Due to the excellent maneuverability and reversibility, watercolor is one of painting materials used most widely in the conservation cases. Although the stability of these imported-watercolor had been tested and investigated before sold in the markets and proved the high qualities for the conservation fields, the investigations were always tested by using the standards and environment which were in the Europe and America. Therefore, the results whether could be adapted to the island climate such as Taiwan’s was usually high temperature and humidity were still need to be further investigated. In the study, the testing painting materials chose marketed cadmium red, cadmium yellow, titanium dioxide, and ultramarine watercolors; the substrates chose paper, canvas and wood. The samples were made by spraying the watercolors on the three different substrates. On canvas and wood base substrates using rabbit skin glue mixed calcium carbonate and Plextol ® 498 mixed glass bubbles as filler to imitate the similar retouching condition. The experiments would be carried out by the light aging test, heat-humid aging test and adhesion test, and tried to figure out the states of deterioration that might be discovered when the watercolors retouched on these different ground bases. The results showed that light fastness of watercolor paints were generally better than weather resistance. The influences of supporter material, different ground bases and gum Arabic might cause the watercolors deterioration and yellowing rather than the pigment itself. Thus, watercolor was not recommended to use in the environment without temperature and humidity-controlled. In addition, selected watercolors should not consider the brandwidth, but should take account of the pigment quality and stability first in order to slow down the speed of color changing of the retouching over time.
