He created the "New Tango" (Tango Nuevo) which blends the elements of the traditional Argentine tango music, the western classical music and the jazz. As the result, the traditional Argentine tango music changes from the role of dance accompaniment into the high- degree artistic performance music for the concert hall. Piazzolla composed quintet Verano Porteño in 1965 for the Argentine playwright Alberto Rodriguez Munoz’s (1915-2004) play Melenita de Oro. This composition is one of the representative repertoire for the "New Tango" and is successfully accepted by the conservative people who reject Piazzolla’s tango music at first. In 1983, José Bragato (b. 1915), the Italian cellist and composer, arranged this piece into piano trio. This arrangement is popularly performed today. This thesis is going to discuss the historical origins of the Argentine tango music, as well as analyze Piazzolla’s Verano Porteño and Bragato’s piano trio from theme, form, rhythm, performance techniques, melody and orchestration to present the connections between the two versions. Besides, by researching Piazzolla’s biograghy and works, I will explore the ways of interpretation in Bragato’s arrangement to show Piazzolla original’s compositional ideas.
