The methanolic extract of the stem of A. formosana showed potent anti-inflammatory and cytotoxicity activities. The MeOH extract was partitioned into n-hexane-, ethyl acetate-, n-BuOH-, and water-soluble fractions. Bioassay-guided fractionation of active ethyl acetate-soluble fraction led to the isolation of sixteen compounds, including of four new compounds: 3,4,5,3'',4''-penta-O-methylcoruleoellagic acid (1), 3,5,3''-tri-O-methylflavellagic acid (2), 3,4,3'',4''-tetra-O-methylcoruleoellagic acid (3), and astronic acid (4), along with eleven known compounds, evofolin-A (5), farrerol (6), 5,4''-dihydroxy-7-methoxy- 6,8-di-C-methylflavanone (7), 3,4,3''-tri-O-methylellagic acid (8), 3,3''-di-O-methylellagic acid (9), 3,4,3'',4''-tetra-O-methylflavellagic acid (10), hexamethylcoruleoellagic acid (11), betulinic acid (12), arjunilic acid (13), stachilic acid (14), oleanolic acid (15), and ursolic acid (16).
