It was a descriptive, correlational study. A convenience sample of 257 family members in the intensive care units was recruited. A structured questionnaire included demographics, Family-Centered Care Survey-Intensive Care Unit-Mandarin (FCCS-ICU-M), State Anxiety Inventory (SAI), Verran and Snyder-Halpern Sleep Scale. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0. Data analysis included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Findings indicated that family member’s age and marital status, patient as an economic source, patients’ illness severity, having family members’ being previous hospitalized in the intensive care units, and frequency of contact with nurses significantly accounted for Family-Centered Care, particularly the frequency of contact with nurses. Patient’s illness severity significantly explained the family member’s anxiety with a total variance of 1.6%. The perception of family-centered care and employment status explained the variance in family members’ sleep quality was statistically significant at 8.6%. The results of this study may provide the guidance to the development of nursing education in clinical practice and the formulation of nursing policy and in turn, enhance the nurses’ holistic care for the patients’ families and the satisfaction of patients’ families as well.
