Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of job stress, role conflicts, job involvement and job performance in junior high school teachers. The subjects were 238 junior high school teachers drawn from Tainan City. The “Job Stress Scale” (JSS), the “Role Conflicts Scale” (RCS), the “Job Involvement Scale” (JIS), and the “Job Performance Scale” (JPS) were conducted. The main findings were as follows:
1. Junior high school teachers possessed an average level of job stress.
2. There were significant differences in JSI scores among senior high school teachers of different teaching experience, different administration working experience and different aspiration of doing administration.
3. Junior high school teachers possessed an above average level of role conflicts.
4. Junior high school teachers possessed an above average level of job involvement.
5. Junior high school teachers possessed an above average level of job performance.
6. There were significant positive correlations between JSS scores and RCS scores. Four JSS factors accounted for 54.613% of total variance in three RCS factors.
7. There were significant negative correlations between JSS scores and JIS scores. Four JSS factors accounted for 13.727% of total variance in three JIS factors.
8. There were significant negative correlations between JSS scores and JPS scores. Four JSS factors accounted for 8.690% of total variance in two JPS factors.
9. There were significant negative correlations between RCS scores and JIS scores. Three RCS factors accounted for 17.633% of total variance in three JIS factors.
10. There were significant negative correlations between RCS scores and JPS scores. Three RCS factors accounted for 12.573% of total variance in two JPS factors.
11. There were significant positive correlations between JIS scores and JPS scores. Three JIS factors accounted for 44.179% of total variance in two JPS factors.
12. Job stress, through the mediating process of influence of role conflicts, had an indirected effect on job performance. Using 4 JSS factors and 3 RCS factors as predictive variables and 3 JPS factors as criterion varialbes in ‘Structural Equdtion Modeling’, the directed effect of JSS factors toward JPS factors was β=.147, while the indirected effect was β= -.503。
13. Job stress, through the mediating process of influence of job involvement, had an indirected effect on job performance. Using 4 JSS factors and 3 JIS factors as predictive variables and 3 JPS factors as criterion varialbes in ‘Structural Equdtion Modeling’, the directed effect of JSS factors toward JPS factors was β=-.024, while the indirected effect was β = -.395。
14. Role conflicts, through the mediating process of influence of job involvement, had an indirected effect on job performance. Using 3 RCS factors and 3 JIS factors as predictive variables and 3 JPS factors as criterion varialbes in ‘Structural Equdtion Modeling’, the directed effect of JSS factors toward JPS factors wasβ= -.060, while the indirected effect was β = -.400。
15. Job stress, through the mediating process of influence of role conflicts and job involvement, had an indirected effect on job performance. Using 4 JSS factors , 3 RCS factors and 3 JIS factors as predictive variables and 3 JPS factors as criterion varialbes in ‘Structural Equdtion Modeling’, the directed effect of JSS factors toward JPS factors was β=.088, while the indirected effect was β= -.525。
