Museums and their functions of cultural tourism:a case study of visitor experiences at the Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration

For the past a few years, taking weekend trips has become a trend in Taiwan. The functions of many local museums in Taiwan are reshaped by this trend in that they have been turned to be places of cultural heritage promotion and protection into tourist attractions. While working at Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration, I became interested in knowing how this cultural heritage venue was growing to be seen as a tourist destination, and then I decided to investigate why the visitor numbers to the museum have been increasing over the past a few years although its budget was limited and the exhibitions rarely changed. Literature reviews of museum studies, tourism studies, and visitor experience analysis serve as the theoretical basis of this study. Through collecting data from various sources, and interviews of the curator,the director of Yilan County Cultural Affairs Bureau, the volunteers and the visitors of the museum, my research has the following three conclusions: 1.Adjustments to marketing strategies have had some success at attracting tourists to the museum but further improvements need to be made in the museum’s research, collections, education, exhibition programs and the interaction with neighboring residents as well as other local cultural institutions. 2.The architectural design and the location of Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration are the main features contributing to the museum’s success in attracting tourists. 3.At present the majority of the visitors coming to the museum are first time visitors from outside of Yilan county. Their visiting experience meets with the governing authority’s planning strategy--that is, positioning the museum as a cultural heritage site with its architectural features.
