Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 兒童與家庭學系碩士在職專班 === 102 === This study aims to understand whether premarital cohabitation will have an effect on the quality of marital relationship. Especially, we intend to examine if reasons for marriage moderate the relationship between premarital cohabitation and quality of marital relationship. The data used in this study come from the longitudinal data set of “A Study of the Early Marriage Development in Taiwan, WaveⅠ”(NSC89-2412-H-158-001), which is funded by Nation Science Council, Executive Yuan. The sample of the research is consisted of newlywed couples who have registered their marriage at the household registration office in Taipei from December 2000 to February 2001. In this study, 384 samples are valid, including 182 couples totally. The result of this study shows that premarital cohabitation is only associated positively with husbands’ marital satisfaction. This means husbands who lived with their spouse prior to marriage have a higher level of marital satisfaction. Premarital cohabitation is not related to wives’ relationship quality of marriage (such as marital satisfaction, marital intimacy, the frequency of marital conflict and conflict response). Besides, reasons for marriage did not moderate the effect of relationship between the premarital cohabitation and marital quality. However, this study indicates that marriage reasons are the major factors that affect marital quality for both husdand and wives. Newlywed couples who married for love have a level of higher intimacy and marital satisfaction, as well as tend to discuss calmly in marital conflict than those who married for social responsibility. Husbands who married for love have lower frequency of marital conflicts and tend to less negative behaviors than those who married for social responsibility. However, marriage reasons are not associated with wives’ frequency of marital conflicts and negative behaviors. Finally, according to the results and conclusions of the research, this study provides the couples prior to marriage and educational institutions with useful suggestions and gives further reference direction for the future research.
