Moreover, the speed and advantage of language development can not only affect individual all kinds of learning, but also have a big impact on a child’s social relationship and healthy personality development. Being aware of the importance of vocabulary, this research aims to design a vocabulary proficiency test that is valid and reliable, to provide elementary teachers find out students’ vocabulary barrier in advance and conduct the remedial teaching program. The lack of vocabulary ability can affect children’s language proficiency which will further impact on their other academic performance indirectly and cause children to lose their learning interest. The participants in this study are the first grade elementary students and the parents. A questionnaire regarding home language environment was given to parents to investigate children’s vocabulary performance at home and their language proficiency in school as well as the related research in their personal background information. Through statistical analyses, the results of this study are as follows: 1.There is a significant difference between family’s SES and children’s vocabulary ability. SES is low, children’s vocabulary ability is low. 2.There is a significant difference between home language environment and children’s vocabulary ability. The better home language environment, the better children’s vocabulary ability. 3.Diverse life experiences apparently can predict children’s vocabulary ability. Children with diverse life experiences can be predicted performing better in vocabulary ability. It is hope that the final results of this research can be used as references for parents, practitioners, government agencies and future researchers.
