However, there are always two sides of a coin. Abusive supervision does not always bring negative results. In this research, Machiavelli personality is used as mediating variable in the connections between supervisors’ abusive supervision and subordinates’ career commitment. The 220 samples in this study are from practitioners in Taiwan’s construction industry. The findings of this study indicate that low Machiavelli personality plays the role as a mediator between abusive supervision and career commitment. When abusive supervision is applied to subordinates with low Machiavelli personality, the subordinates will think the abusive supervision is out of the supervisors’ high expectation of them. As a result, the more abusive supervision from their supervisors, the higher career commitment they will have. The mediator effect of Machiavelli personality is demonstrated in such connections. In addition, this study also finds different methods of abusive supervision also have different influences on the subordinates’ career commitment. By exploring the influences of different abusive supervision methods on subordinates’ career commitment, this study can provide helpful suggestions on effective management.
