Description
Summary:碩士 === 銘傳大學 === 應用英語學系碩士在職專班 === 102 === “It is often claimed that English textbook materials are mostly unwittingly intuitively- rather than empirically-based and that this bookish form of language is farfrom reflecting the real language use.” (Abdolvahed and Jayakaran Mukundan, 2012,p.9) This study aims to analyze the use of phrasal verbs in junior high school English textbooks (Joy English textbooks) and enhance the vocabulary learning of junior high school students in terms of its frequency usage. The COCA, A Collocation of English Corpora serves as a source to verify the phrasal verbs found in the reading and dialogue texts in the textbooks. The research purposes in the study are to analyze the use frequency of phrasal verbs, to investigate how the phrasal verbs are highlighted in the textbooks, and to compare the frequencies of phrasal verbs found in the textbooks with the ones from Corpora database to further cross examine the appropriateness of the usages in the English textbooks for junior high schools in Taiwan. The results revealed that the use of phrasal verbs in the English textbooks for junior high schools in Taiwan is not appropriate in regard to the frequency and the way they are highlighted in the texts. Phrasal verbs are often considered informal in English. However, some phrasal verbs were deed employed in formal context by native speakers (Cornell, 1985). The frequencies of phrasal verbs in the corpora are quite different from those in the English textbooks. This study found that the phrasal verbs which are presented in the textbooks still have high frequency in daily life usage which implies phrasal verbs teaching in textbooks still needs much improvement. Therefore, it is suggested that the textbook editors should carefully consider the adoption of phrasal verbs in the textbooks, and the textbook writers should re-evaluate their treatment of phrasal verbs to put more emphasis on phrasal verbs. It is recommended that EFL teachers should provide precise instruction to compensate for the limited exposure to phrasal verbs and help learners improve their language proficiency.
