博士 === 銘傳大學 === 應用中國文學系博士班 === 102 === This study uses Chinese newspaper articles of the missionaries in Qing Dynasty as the study material, which include Chinese Monthly Magazine by Robert Morrison, A Monthly Record of Important Selections by Walter Henry Medhurst and Eastern Western Monthly Magazine by Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff. Chinese Monthly Magazine is the first modern Chinese language newspaper, which followed by A Monthly Record of Important Selections, while Eastern Western Monthly Magazine is the first modern Chinese language newspaper published in China. All three newspapers have a significant impact on the history of Chinese newspaper as well as on the cultural exchange between the East and the West. This purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship of missionaries’ newspaper articles to the Chinese literature and interaction of Chinese and Western culture, and to explorer its impact on modern China. This paper is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the research motivation, objectives and scope. The second chapter provides information on the background of the early newspapers written by the missionaries of Qing Dynasty. The third chapter analyzes the structure and content of the three Chinese newspaper articles. The fourth chapter discussed the writing style of the newspaper articles by applying a multi-frame structure of the Chinese literature. The fifth chapter discusses in the presence of Chinese and Western cultures conflicts, how the missionaries used the connotation of Chinese literature and culture as the based, and transform to a standard Christianity culture system in efforts to change Chinese readers views and thinking. The sixth chapter shows the impact of the missionaries’ newspaper articles on the modern astronomy, geography, and literature in China. The last chapter is the conclusion, which highlights the results and limitations of this study in hoping to provide reference for future researches.
