Particular attention is paid to describe the system design and key components of the electronic gear-changing control system for the ibike, the mathematical equations between the pedaling input power and output power, and the gear-changing motion equation during the gear-changing process. Based on the measured information from the pedaling rate sensor, pedaling torque sensor and bike speed sensor, two type-1 fuzzy gear-changing controllers are proposed to accomplish smooth gear-changing strategy. In order to avoid uncertainties or noise occurring in the three sensors, two interval type-2 fuzzy gear-changing controllers are presented to carry out better gear changes by comparing to the previous type-1 fuzzy gear-changing controllers.
