The women in the traditional society of China didn’t have power to love and marry someone they loved. Until the end of the Qing, people initially received the Western thought to spread. The women started to have opportunity to be educated, which made them place importance on independence, and liberation. They also thought that it’s necessary to have the power of education, economy, and to be equal with men’s position. The women believed that love is the foundation of the marriage. They opposed traditional engagement marriage which was decided by parents. The female writers conveyed their opinions of women’s rights by literary works which contained the subjects of female and social movements to care about women. Because some educated men who were engaged by their parents thought that love is the most important thing, they decided to abandon their wife to court educated women. Meanwhile, some educated women became mistresses for men who were married, and they didn’t care about wife’s feelings. This article focuses on three female writers who were mistresses. Through their literary works and experiences, we can analyze why they becoming mistresses, and understand what kind of hardship they need to deal with. We also can understand the trials that educated women who were mistresses had to face in the initial period of China.
