Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 會計學系 === 102 === Abstract In this paper, We use A-share non-financial companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock market during 2003-2012 as samples. We investigate the methods of earnings management used in Chinesestate-owned enterprises. Additionally, company life cycles were divided to determine the differences among themethods of earnings managementbetween each life cycle. Inthis study, weidentified the methods of earnings management adopted (accrual earnings management or real earnings management) by Chinese state-owned enterprises. Whether different methods of earnings management wereappliedby enterprises during various stages of life cycles was also investigated. Lastly, the earnings management methods that state-owned enterprises used during various life cycles were determined. We expected that state-owned enterprises are less likely to adjust earnings using accrual itemscompared withnon-state-owned enterprises and that state-owned enterprises are likely to manipulate earnings by using real earnings management. After divide the company's life cycle, we expected the enterpriseswhich in the growth stage are more likely to adopt accrual earnings management to manipulate earnings, whereas enterprises in periods of maturity tended to adopt real earnings management. The results met expectations that state-owned enterprises were unlikely to adopt accrual earnings managementto adjust earnings. However, regarding real earnings management, state-owned enterprises used real earnings managementto a significantlygreater degree than non-state-owned enterprisesdid. In addition, enterprises in growth periods extensively applied accrual earnings management. However, state-owned enterprises in growth periods seldom appliedaccrual earnings management, whereas state-owned enterprises in periods of maturity and decline were increasingly inclined towardusing real earnings managementto adjust earnings.
