Because many different sensor network protocols that are incompatible on the system design, expansion, and maintenance are obstacles. Therefore, the IEEE 1451 protocol defines two kind standard function nodes that NCAP and STIM, and uses a unitary system platform to collect transducer data, monitor environment, or control system. In the environment monitoring, in order to achieve the goal that widely monitor environment and share information, use STIM retrieve signals in the partial environment and collects by NCAP spreads to the Internet. In the control system, the STIM and the controlled object build an interface that can exchange information, with construct the control program in NCAP that can immediately and effectively achieve objectives. At the same time, using wide area network (WAN) capacity of NCAP and distributed interactive of other NCAP to expand the scale of whole control system. Before the applications of IEEE 1451 protocol still not mature, for effectively integrate the existent sensor network that practicality applied in IEEE 1451 protocol family. The middleware technique can encapsulate the detail translations between the IEEE1451 protocol and the existent sensor network, through the standard application program interface to hide the detail translations of practicality networks, achieves the goal of unitary IEEE1451 system platform. This paper developed the middleware by two sensor networks that wired CANOpen and wireless Zigbee. Middleware has been achieved and respectively constructed translation interface of CANOpen and Zigbee sensor networks, The functions of IEEE 1451 middleware have request-reply command translation, node discovery, surveillance, failure diagnosis, break detection ,and the transducer data access to create a virtual STIM and sensor network, let NCAP can access sensors information of STIM base on IEEE 1451 protocol. The development achievement of this paper gradually add customized sensor network protocols to extend coverage of the whole sensor network, and concretely implement the goal setting of IEEE 1451 protocol.
