Therefore, in order to maintain the electric cable quality, the state of insulation examination and its test method of power cable is worth to discuss. There are many kinds of electric cable test methods today. There are considerable differences by using direct current(DC) or alternative current(AC) for the test. The methods are also different in various countries. In this research, various international major standard test specifications are discussed to understand the differences of various test methods. The direct-current test method is generally used for 11.4kV and 22.8kV electrical power distribution system in Taipower. The direct-current test method is applying DC voltage to the electric cable. Cable insulation characteristics can then be found based on applied voltage and the magnitudes of leakage current. In this study, the limitation and characteristics of direct current cable test is illustrated.
