A Study on women's community participation -The Case of Fu Xing Community Security Patrol Team in Changhua

碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 公共事務與公民教育學系 === 102 === Although women have gradually gained their rights in all aspects and participated in public affairs, we still tend to be limited in the traditional stereotypes under the patriarchy that women should be engaged in something about the chores. Reading some studies about women's community participation, this study found that most of studies are focusing on exploring something which are connected with women, including environmental protection, caring activities, and study group, or community leaders that directly subvert our impression. However, this study is to explore that women join the Community Security Patrol Team that it was usually occupied by men.The ratio of female members in Changhua Fu Xing community Security Patrol Team is relatively higher in the whole country. And what’s the reason to motivate these women to participate in this kind of group, and in the process of participation, how do they interpret their behaviors? And how do they empower themselves? This study will use the view of public and private sphere, the theory of civic participation, and the theory of women's empowerment to examine and answer these questions. The major findings are obtained as following. 1. The motivation of women's community participation are (1) to make the community resident’s responsibility for her husband; (2) joining the community on the basis of good karma ; (3) the invitation of human solicitation; (4) the invitation of the spouse . 2. The pursuit of the private interests and the community public interests can be combined. 3. Although the effectiveness of citizen participation appears on the women, most of them supposed themselves as the executants. 4. The experiences of the private and the public sphere have become an important resource for women's community participation. 5. In the process of community participation, the boundary of the private and the public sphere will gradually be loosened. 6. The participatory experiences and reflections in the public sphere will reverse to affect their life in the private sphere. 7. The community empowerment and the female members’ empowerment are mutually influenced. Finally, make two suggestions. 1. The Community Security Patrol Team can mix men and women in one group to strengthen women's self-confidence. 2. The government should commit to promote gender education with the community.
