Summary:碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 幼兒教育學系研究所 === 102 === Abstract This qualitative study aims to investigate the use of picture books to implement "birth, old age, sickness and death" education for young children and to understand their concepts of "birth, old age, sickness and death." The researcher used picture books to design 12 lessons to teach seven kindergarten children. These children were interviewed prior and after these lessons. The children's concepts of "birth, old age, sickness, and death" before they received the lessons were as follows: knowing they were born from their mothers' belly, having simple conceptual in origins of life; knowing people were the elderly through the appearance of white hair and a long beard, determining oldness through physical changes; understaning people must seek medical treatment and therapy to cure illness, handling disease based on past experiences, believing that people will go to heaven after death, and having animistic ideas. The researcher then used 12 picture books to teach ideas about birth, old age, sickness and death. Painting, role-playing, planting, and other ways were included to extend children's learning. After the lessons, children's concepts were as follows: For the origin of life they have a deeper understanding of basic concepts, and know based on love people create their next generations. Children also are able to see the delicate changes when people are getting old. They understand the needs of the elderly, and is willing to help accompany the elderly. Their understanding of oldness was extended from the observation of the physiological level to the psychological level. Children learned that when people are very sick, it's possible for them to receive intensive chemotherapy treatment, and will lose their hair and even face death. When faced with the death of loved ones, children understand the possible reactions and sadness grief coping strategies. In addition, during question discussions, oral expression ability of young children was more progressive. Their viewpoints changed, and they felt willing to help the elderly. Based on the results, the researcher suggests that when selecting picture books, children's age and the curriculum themes should be considered. Children's experience should be related to the curriculum. Current events and life events can also be shared, so that children will learn to understand life, respect for life and to cherish life.
