| Summary: | 碩士 === 國防大學 === 戰略研究所 === 102 === With the evolution in modern military technology and regional political situations, the use of soft power is playing an increasingly important role in China's charm offensive. Among various means of soft power, culture could produce the most everlasting effect. Cultural identification not only constitutes a significant share in national identity, but may also gradually transform political identification; as a whole, cultural identification is conducive to future propaganda for united front.
This paper explores the approaches and strategies of China's use of Mazu belief for pursuing religious united front toward Taiwan; how religious exchanges, with the practices of Taiwan's relaxation in religion regulations and cross-Strait interaction in Mazu-commemorating activities, have impacted Taiwan in terms of cultural security; and whether religious united front may cause a shift in people's political ideology.
The research findings of this paper are as follows. The PRC itself is conversant with cultural impact the use of soft power. Currently, China is committed to export of soft power through the globalization of its Confucius Institutes; Beijing also pursues peaceful unification with Taiwan through construction of cultural united front. China's religious exchange across the Strait is designed to contribute to cultural united front.
Finally, if Beijing succeeds in delivering religious united front, fermentation in cultural identification will facilitate its takeover and control of Taiwan. It is recommended that Taiwan authorities heed the pitfalls of cross-Strait religious exchanges and improve regulations in this respect.
