In recent days, most of the navigation systems utilize Global Positioning System (Global Positioning System, GPS) and wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) assisted A-GPS as the tools for identifying the location of the user. However, this kind of navigation system cannot be used in the indoor environment because the GPS signal is blocked by the architecture. In addition, the vertical movement information such as the floor information is not available in the GPS. It implies that the ability of GPS is limited in the indoor situation. Therefore, in this thesis, a new navigation system is constructed of the Augmented Reality (AR) and the A-star shortest path planning guide map. This system allows users to receive the navigation routing information no matter in the indoor or the outdoor environment. Users will easily be able to find the shortest path between two points in the system supported region. The proposed system is not constructed based on the positioning information from GPS or A-GPS, but the positioning information is generated by the AR code. Hence, the energy consumption of the mobile device is reduced because the energy for receiving the GPS/A-GPS signal and the Wi-Fi signal can be cut-off.
