First, by properly introducing a novel loop parasitic shorted strip and a C-shaped ground plane, the antenna design provides the impedance bandwidths (RL ≧6 dB) of 277 / 1176 MHz for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) systems, respectively. The proposed planar monopole antenna reduces the antenna size by at least 22% since the overall antenna size is only 35 × 10 × 0.8 mm3. Meanwhile, the measured peak gains and antenna efficiencies are about 2.2 / 3.1 dBi and 83 / 81 % across the operating bands, respectively. Next, by integrating with the monopole strip and the switching component, an octa-band antenna for a metal-shell mobile phone is proposed with the impedance bandwidth of 444 / 1515 MHz for LTE bands. Furthermore, the measured peak gains and antenna efficiencies are about 0.8 / 3.9 dBi and 53 / 64 %, respectively. Finally, studies of the body specific absorption rate (SAR) for two proposed LTE mobile phone antennas are discussed.
