Recently, Taiwan government has begun to encourage and promote marine recreational activities, the pole and line fishery has therefore gained remarkable growth. However, there still has a number of problems and obstacles while the government tries to restructure and transform the fisheries industry . This study attempts to provide an overview of the current status and assessment of future potential for the pole and line fishery in Kaohsiung as a reference and recommendation for government acting policy and management. Research was carried out from August, 2013 to May, 2014, whereby data was collected from captains and crew of pole and line fishing vessel, such as their opinions and feedback on operations and management. Concrete results of this study are as follows: 1.Pole and line fishermen believe that some of the predominant reasons for dwindling fish catches and resources are due to marine environmental pollution, the destruction of reefs, overfishing by net and light-fisheries, and the illegal use of toxins, electroshock and blast fishing. 2.The median age of most pole and line fishermen is concentrated within the range of 40~59, with signs of an ageing population. Furthermore, pole and line fishermen believe the increasing costs of maintaining their vessels and high oil prices are the main factors behind the growing costs of maintaining their business, and will eventually create a detrimental effect on the whole fishing industry. 3.Pole and line fishermen believe in the legislation of clear rules and regulations governing the volume of fish catches, closed fishing zones and seasons for all different fisheries, and further expanding the 3-mile marine preservation zone. This will prevent the continual decline of fishing catches in the near seas and coastlines of Taiwan. 4.Pole and line fishermen are mostly open to the idea of tourist fishing. They are willing to take their customers out to sea and hope with a simple fishing license, these tourists will be able to participate in fishing activities, so that the pole and line fishing industry has a chance of survival.
