By analyzing the trip distance distribution of taxi passengers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, we found that the distribution of short trip distance less than 8 KM is exponential decay, however, a power-law distribution is found in trip distance larger than 8 KM. Regional analysis showed that exponential distribution of short trip distance is observed in urban area, while the power-law distribution of the long trip distance is related to suburban region. Sociodemographic research showed that the population density is an exponential function in urban area, and it is a power-law distribution in suburban region. Based on the population density distribution from the sociodemographic research, we performed a Monte Carlo simulation and repeated successfully the observed empirical result of the taxi passenger trip distribution function.
