During the Japanese-Occupying period at Meiji thirty-four years(1901), the inhabitation of two different ethnic groups merger into the same administrative region for the first time. Besides the Ping-pu and Hakka ethnic groups, Min-nan immigrants later come here, making Shan lin Area a region with multicultural ethnic groups. The main purpose of this study is to explore the relations between Hakka and other ethnic groups in Shan lin Area during the Japanese-Occupation period by means of the ethnic contact and interaction between exogamy and adoption. The study also tries to research Hakka from the view of Hakka surrounding ethnic groups, jumping off the Hakka-centered full angle, with a more objective view of other ethnic groups to see the relations of Hakka ethnic groups. The study is based on the analytic conclusion of the census statistics in household registration book No. 10012230-0001 to 10012230-007 at Kaohsiung City Household Registration Office of Shan lin Area during the Japanese-Occupation period , supplemented by historical data and official documents, academic theses and journals, and field study to visit and record the elders’ collective memories about ethnic relations. The theory of the study is based on the theory of ethnic identity, examining the research literature of ethnic exogamy and adoption, and Hakka ethnic identity. The quantitative information gathered by the method of field study and analytic conclusion of literature examination is to explore the exogamy, adoption, ethnic relations and ethnic identity between the Hakka, Ping-pu, and Min-nan people in Shan lin Area. The study found that: (1) During Japanese-Occupation period, people in Shan lin Area, deeply restricted by geographical environment, mainly have endogamy in the same village, but don't refuse exogamy. (2) Parents value endogamy more than other family members, having cohesion and discrimination for the homogeneous people, while the young generations are more likely to have exogamy. (3) In Hakka priority-occupied area, Hakka and Ping-pu are more friendly, while in Ping-pu priority-occupied area, Ping-pu and Min-nan are more friendly. LIN,SHU-LING 林淑鈴 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 111 zh-TW
