And the mission of a lighting designer is to help performers describe the story, deliver emotion and complete their performance. The description of a lighting designer’s job sounds simple; however, the content and the process of lighting are quite complicated. To achieve the visual arts of theatre, performers, stage, lighting, costumes, and imaging technology, they all must be creatively elaborated and combined with each other to reflect and convey the text to a production for the audience to appreciate. Creativity is defined as the ability to generate ideas, that may be useful in communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. For example, a playwright uses words to create a story; a director uses techniques, concepts and skills to present a production. The similar creative process integrated with thinking, concepts and techniques also applies to the design of stage, lighting, costumes and imaging technology. An experienced lighting designer can tailor his lighting design to all types of performance based on his thinking, concepts, and judgments. He can also evaluate the situation and resolve problems, such as technical issues and budget meeting, during the process of a production. Knowing all the theories and lighting techniques are not enough to become a lighting designer; one can only set foot in the theatre through practical experience using lighting instruments and methods effectively. Not only that, but make the presentation artistically in order to satisfy the requirements set forth by the director or head planner. This essay is aimed to investigate the knowledge and methods that a modern lighting designer should possess, i.e., how the creative thinking is developed and turned into concepts. How to design, make a decision and how to judge for bringing out a performance. To illustrate and discuss lighting designs, I would use the practical cases from the work of “Salome” by National Symphony Orchestra. Ray-lin Tsai 蔡瑞霖 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 229 zh-TW
