Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 教育學系課程與教學碩士班 === 102 === The aim of this thesis was to improve English Leaning motivation through applying English films in the English classes of the vocational high school. As an English teacher in a vocational high school, the researcher was bothered by students’ low English motivation. That motivated the researcher to conduct this action research. The purposes of this study were as follows.
1.The researcher reviewed the literature on applying English films in English learning.
2.The researcher analyzed the influences of applying English films to students’ English learning motivation in vocational high school classes.
3.The researcher applied English films in vocational high school English classes through an action research.
4.The researcher offered recommendations on applying English films in English classes to other vocational high school English teachers, based on the research results.
The researcher conducted an action research on a class of 39 students of the first grade in electrical engineering major in a vocational high school. Based on the literature reviews and the class goals on English courses, the researcher applied seven English films during the English classes in 10 weeks, 70 periods in total. The researcher evaluated students’ English learning motivation through the questionnaire “English Learning Motivation Survey Questionnaire” from Ya-Chu Kuo (2011). The collected data was analyzed by the statistical software SPSS version 12.0. Data from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by means of paired samples t-test. Also, the researcher evaluated students’ English learning motivation through studying feedbacks, interviews, classroom observation notes, and other research instruments.
After conducting two cycles of action research, the researcher analyzed the results from the collected data from the questionnaire “English Learning Motivation Survey Questionnaire,” analyzed students’ feedbacks, interviews, classroom observation notes, and found that:
1.Applying English films in English classes was helpful to motivate the vocational high school students’ English learning.
2.This action research project was mainly to motivate students’ extrinsic motivation, especially the rewarding part.
3.Two major features of films were helpful to motivate student English learning are films of interesting topics and of students’ preferred types.
4.Films were believed to be helpful to students’ listening comprehension.
5.This action research was a sufficient way to achieve the vocational high school English learning goals through using films.
Above all, applying English films in the English classes was able to motivate English learning motivation to vocational high school students, and to make English classes more interesting.
