In this study, there are two groups of first grade students from Da-She Elementary School, Lu Zhu, Kaohsiung. One group, the researcher’s own class, is the experimental group. The control group is another class of similar level to the experimental group. This study uses a quasi-experimental design. In the qualitative analysis, the researcher gets a whole picture of the reactions from students in experimental group based on the worksheets and semi-structured interviews. In the quantitative analysis, a statistical analysis on post tests from both classes was made to ensure the students’ improvement through changed learning conditions and abilities was significant. Delayed post tests were used to determine the level of retention of learning by students in the experimental group. An interest and confidence scale is designed to conduct the questionnaire of the number and percentage analysis. Here are the conclusions of the study: 1. The statistics from the post and delayed post tests tell us that the use of picture books helps the students improve and it is effective in retention of learning. 2. Using picture books helps high-level students improve in a remarkable way. It also shows a significant improvement on the medium and lower- level students' learning. 3. According to the scale of interest and confidence in learning mathematics, first grade students have much more interest and confidence through learning with picture books.
