This study proposes a new marine transportation mode called Combo Containerships to create multi-revenue sources including container freight, car freight, general cargo freight and passenger ticket fees. This new mode could increase the transportation accessibility and vessel utilization greatly and liner shipping companies could deploy this new type vessel to the Taiwan-China short sea services. This study investigated the operational type and functions of Combo Containerships. In consideration of the throughputs of containers and passengers, as well as distances and transit time between Taiwan and China main ports, we applied the Grey forecasting method to forecast the future potential containers and passengers as the gravity between these ports and to propose the feasible routes.
