The focus is on how they deal with their work pressure and what strategies they would employ facing different levels of pressure. To acquire objective data, this study adopted a questionnaire and 205 public school academic affairs directors from New Taipei City were surveyed. The research instrument was “A Survey Questionair of the Elementary School Directors of Academic Affairs’ Work Pressure and the Stratagies Employed,” designed by the author. There were 171 returned, and the valid cases were 169. The return rate is 83.41%. The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS system, using the statistic methods for analysis and discussion based on the analysis. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1. The overall work pressure of academic affair directors s is at middle-high level. 2. The major cause of the academic affair directors’ pressure is administrative workload. There are also other causes, such as professional knowledge, the gap between expectation and performance, and interpersonal relationships. 3. The academic affair directors often employ efficient strategies to handle the pressure. 4. The most frequently employed strategy by the academic affair directors is using rational approaches to deal with it. Other strategies include on the job studies to improve professional knowlege, seeking support and help, and self-adjustment. 5. Female academic affair directors have more pressure than male counterparts. 6. The academic affair directors aged 30 and below have more pressure than those aged 41 and above. 7. The academic affair directors without administrative experiences have more pressure than the experienced ones. 8. The academic affair directors in schools with 12 or less classes, have more pressure than those working for schools with more than 12 classes. 9. Female academic affair directors employ strategies to handle pressure more often than male counterparts. 10. The academic affair directors without administrative experiences employ more strategies to handle pressure more often than those with administrative experiences. 11. The academic affair directors in big schools (25 classes or more) would employ strategies to handle the pressure more often than those working for small schools (12 classes or less). 12. The academic affair directors with high work pressure often resort to strategies to deal with the pressure. Directors with pressure caused by administrative workload often employed strategies such as rational approach and seeking support and help to deal with the pressure. The recommendations for educational administration institutions, elementary school principals, directors of academic affairs, and for future studies on the subjet are also suggested.
