The study discovered the learning motivations that helped drive the disadvantaged students to demonstrate high learning achievement in the adverse environment, and investigated how students’ underprivileged backgrounds affected their learning achievement and learning motivation. Adopting quantitative research and the semi-structured interview with 16 objectives, including 8 high achiever elementary students in New Taipei City and 8 head teachers, the study analyzed and investigated how the disadvantaged students showed their the intention and motivation in self-learning. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Different types of underprivileged backgrounds can affect the performance and motivation of the disadvantaged students. 2. High-grader students showed more focused learning motivation, and demonstrated better learning results. 3. In terms of the disadvantaged students at the elementary level, girls showed higher learning achievement and motivation than boys. 4. Constant after-school learning and good parent-child relationship helps enhance disadvantaged students’ learning motivation and achievement. 5. Parents’ educational backgrounds exerted insignificant influence on disadvantaged students’ learning motivation and high achievement. 6. The parents of disadvantaged students, who showed higher achievement, were still willing to invest in their children despite facing financial difficulties. 7. Positive teacher-student interaction and peer relationship can stimulate students’ learning motivation and foster their high achievement.
