碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 102 === Roger Quilter (1877-1953) is one of few composer who devote themselves to creating art song. His works are primarily song, and he reach the permanent position in musical history only by song; he has been hailed as “Singer composer”. The creative peak of Roger Quilter’s composition is from 1904 to 1929. In his works, the most-used lyric is William Shakespeare’s (1564-1616) lyric. In view of that fact, this article studies, by literatures, his two suite of songs of Shakespeare, which are Three Shakspeare songs Op.6 and Five Shakspeare songs Op.23 respectively. The song’s lyrics are chosen from Shakespeare’s plays – “Twelfth Night”, “As You Like It”, “Cymbeline” and “Measure for Measure”. There are five chapters in this research paper, the chapter 1 is divided into two sections, research motive and reserach method respectively. Chapter 2 contains two sections including an introduction to Roger Quilter and his style of composing. Chapter 3 is separated into two sections, the first is an introduction to William Shakespeare; the second is about the lyrical content of the two sets of the William Shakespeare’s works. Chapter 4 includes two sections, which are the analysis of Three Shakspeare songs Op.6 and Five Shakspeare songs Op.23 respectively. The last, chapter 5, is conclusion.
