The research is based on in-depth interviews for the understanding of filial piety and the lived experiences with females in early adulthood and their mothers. The research examines the process in coping with different filial cognition between mother and daughter. The research shows the following results: (A) Both mothers and daughters possess concept of modern and traditional understanding of filial piety. Given the differences in social background and societal expectations, mothers try to convert to the modern view of filial piety yet they tend to play an authoritative role in order to maintain the familial structure. The daughters will play the traditional daughter role in order to maintain the harmony in familial relationship. However, the daughters expect and value the affection exchange with their mothers. (B) The different viewpoint of filial piety between mother and daughter form a unique perspective. (1) Mothers hope to end the hardship in her generation, hence seeking ways to balance both mordern and traditional view in parenting. The pressure of balancing the roles between generations may be challenging and difficult to handle. Mothers may feel helpless about the situation and worry the loss of relationship with her daughter. (2) Daughters obey their mother based on the emotional aspect in their relationship. While maintaining the harmonious mother-daughter relationship, daughters will seek ways to do things behind their mothers’ back in order to balance between the traditional filial role and the modernized self. (C) Authority and affection intertwine in the parent-child filial relationships. (D) The different ways of balancing role obligation and emotional expression between mother and daughter could create conflict in their relationship. Li-Chu Hung 洪莉竹 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 118 zh-TW
