TSAI, MING-CHANG DEPARTMENT: SOCIOLOGY MAJOR: SOCIOLOGY DEGREE:MASTER OF SOCIOLOGY The major objective of this thesis tries to figure out how do the middle-aged and elderly upgrade high-quality living standard via participating amateur chorus which can help them develop social network, improve social bonding, and facilitate the function of society. To comprehend the meanings of choosing music group for the middle-aged and elderly as well as the function of social network, I analyzed the length of joining the chorus, the frequency of practice, the intimacy among members, and the interaction among 83 members of Melody Chorus (alias). This study could be the reference about middle-aged and elderly participating volunteer groups. The subjects of this research are the members of Melody Chorus (alias) who fit the definition of the middle-aged and elderly. The valid samplings are 83. To achieve the objectives of this research, I designed the pretest questionnaire and then analyzed the posttest questionnaire. In the beginning, I utilized the statistical tools, such as descriptive statistics and multiple regression, to analyze the data. The independent variables are gender, age, marriage, education, social status (household income), and health. At second examination, I add the experience of participating chorus by 25-year-old as controlled variable. At first examination, the dependent variables are (1) the length of joining chorus, (2) frequency of practice, (3) the intimacy with peers, (4) the interaction with other members, and (5) the happiness of life. At the second examination, I check the evidence about associating new members, arranging singing at leisure time, the contacts with other members in last three months. The results of this research present that the background, such as education, social status, and the condition of health, of middle-aged and elderly who participate the amateur chorus are similar. Furthermore, it also indicates that the significant relationship among the length of joining the chorus, the frequency of practicing, the intimacy with peers, and the happiness of life. Under these circumstances, this thesis demonstrates that the affection of music has positive meaning for middle-aged and elderly to participate amateur chorus.
