The Creation Discourse of an Animated Short Film “The Ritual” and a Study about the Nuo Culture

碩士 === 南台科技大學 === 數位內容與動畫設計研究所 === 102 === Even in the age of science, our lives are still surrounded by a variety of superstitious and religious cultures. People contact and participate in these rituals with different attitudes. If we try to find out the origin and the evolution of the behaviors in them, it will be discovered that the context shows the history of a people and its specific perception of life. And a number of colorful stories were hidden behind the ceremonies. “Nuo” was an action of wizardry which existed in the ancient age. It was the original root of the religions of Chinese and East-Asian cultures. We can see rituals derived from the Nuo culture in almost every detail of our religions today. The wizardry dances with masks represented the fear of the inevitable events like living, aging , illness and death and the struggle for them of primeval human beings. And in contrast of these necessary painful things, there existed also relatively enjoyable ones. Inspired of the legend of Chinese New Year, we made this creation, going back through the context and researching the rituals and the meanings of the Nuo culture. And while studying the performance of the ritual in the animated film, we searched for the basic concept which was applicable to the production. During the process of creati on, we recombined the Nuo culture with the elements of the legend of “Year”, such as peach wood charms and the custom of Shou Sui, and presented a mythical story which happened at the night of Chinese New Year’s Eve with an animation.
