One of the emerging drivers in recent studies in adolescent health is lifestyle behavior. Objective: To determine the prevalence and correlates of adolescent smoking behavior in four countries (Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar) in the South East Asia. Methodology: The study used the Global school-based Student Health Survey datasets of the World Health Organization. It is a two-stage cluster sampling design. Adolescent lifestyle behaviors were divided into five categories which are substance use (alcohol and drug use), dietary, physical activity, oral hygiene and truancy. Logistic regression analyses were applied to find out the association between adolescent smoking behavior and lifestyle behavior. Results: The Philippines has the highest prevalence of adolescent smoking behavior with 16.7% followed by Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar with 13.5%, 11.6% and 6%, respectively. Adolescents with substance use were more likely to be associated with smoking behavior. Inversely, adolescents with better oral hygiene were less likely to be associated with adolescent smoking behavior. Adolescent truant behavior was also found to be associated with adolescent smoking behavior. However, the association was found to have interactions with the alcohol use. Conclusion: Adolescent smoking rate was varied among the four countries. From the lifestyle behavior studied substance use, oral hygiene and truancy were found to be associated with adolescent smoking behavior. Jenn-Chang Liou 劉俊昌 2013 學位論文 ; thesis 43 en_US |
