The prevalence of mobile devices has created more possibilities for development of picture books, further causing major changes of our reading models. It is said that reading habits must be nurtured from childhood. However, most modern parents are busy. They prioritize academic performance of their children and send their children to cram schools or daycare classes after school. As a result, they have little time for co-reading with their children. Parent-child co-reading is a kind of parent-child interaction where the parent leads the young child in development of a good reading habit. In this process, the parent can read with the child like a friend of the child’s age and discuss the storyline with the child. Through sharing of feelings and imaginations, both of them can gain a deeper understanding of the story and reinforce their relationship. Based on the theory of parent-child co-reading, the author used a Chinese folk tale “The Marriage of the Mouse’s Daughter” as an example to develop an interactive and multi-mobile device picture book reading application. By connecting displays via wireless network, this application allows both the parent and the child to read the picture book on two different mobile devices. The intuitive and interactive functions of the application enable the parent to tell the story by scaffolding questions and lead the child in thinking about the storyline. This application is intended to create a new co-reading model that facilitates parent-child co-learning. The findings were as follows: (1) Communication using two tablet computers is viable; (2) Electronic picture books promote parent-child exchange and interaction; (3) Parents can alter the storyline by scaffolding questions while telling a story. The picture book co-reading model developed in this study can be a reference for research in related areas. Lai-Chung Lee 李來春 李來春 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 91 zh-TW |
