During his life time, not many flute solo works were created. Flute Concerto is the only concerto for flute composed by Ibert in 1934. It was dedicated to a well-known French flute maestro Marcel Moyse (1889-1984). In this thesis, author uses Ibert’s life and music, previous studies and the author’s experience interpretation of Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto, to analize the work’s composition, melodies and rhythms. This present thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction for the purposes and methods of the thesis. The second chapter lays out the family and social background for Ibert’s music development in the 20th century. His music integrated neo-classicism and impressionism. Chapter three analysis the music structure and material for Ibert’s Flute Concerto. He often transformed short motives into sequences and expanded the music. A discussion of the melody of Flute Concerto in performance and the author’s interpretation of Ibert’s music is carried out in the fourth chapter. The concluding chapter states the contrast natures of the three movements of Ibert’s Flute Concerto, which was a proof of Ibert’s concern for tempos and rhythms.
