By recalling information over progressively longer periods until it could be successfully consolidated into one’s long-term memory, and then used to improve person’s limits of daily activities. Despite that 10~30% persons with dementia had hyperphagia, most studies focused on dealing with eating difficulty. Only a few studies paid attention on hyperphagia. Objectives:To propose an experimental study design used to explore the immediately of spaced retrieval for improving hyperphagia of institutionalized residents with dementia. Methods: Ninety-five subjects who were diagnosed with dementia were chosen from 7 dementia special care units in Taiwan. Then, subjects had randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Forty-nine subjects in the experimental group were given a six-week one by one spaced retrieval of decreasing the hypephagia behavior training session. Forty-six subjects in the control group didn’t have any intervention and received routine care by staff in the long term care facilities. Every training session in the experimental group lasted about forty minutes. Spaced-retrieval was to teach subjects to learn eight messages about remembering appropriate eating behavior and the manner of eating. After interventions, data were obtained, including the scores of hyperphagia in Dementia, eating amount, BMI and the scale of caring hyperphagia distress. Then, researcher uses SPSS17.0 For Windows to analysis the data. Results: After intervention, the frequency and scores of hyperphagia in dementia, and eating amount in the experimental group were significantly better than those in the control group. But, the BMI and caring distress did not have statistic significance. Besides, subjects were getting older, the caring distress got worse. The more visitation times by family or friends the subjects in the experimental group had, the more effect of the frequency and scores of hyperphagia improvement. Subjects who have stayed longer in the facilities showed a more increase scores of hyperphagia. Subjects with high activities of daily living (ADL) also showed a more increase in BMI. Conclusion: According to research findings, the spaced retrieval training could decrease frequency and scores of hyperphagia residents with dementia. The more frequencies of family visits, the better effects of decreasing hyperphagia. It is recommended that the formal caregiver should encourage family members to accompany with subjects in mealtimes to enhance the effectiveness of training. For future studies, to calculate calorie consumption and conduct longitudinal studies to investigate effects of maintenance were also recommended. Li-Chan Lin 林麗嬋 2014 學位論文 ; thesis 92 zh-TW
