Description
Summary:博士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 設計學研究所 === 102 === Profound reflections arose on the social responsibility of the professions due to significant events occurred recently in Taiwan. One of the reflections is focusing on the professional ethics education in universities. Indeed, there are ethical considerations behind these events which rely on the professionals’ well-trained judgment and literacy to improve a positive development of our society. According to two web-based databases built by Taiwan Ministry of Education that “Design Ethics” as a course title in the curricula of undergraduate design programs has been used over a decade, however related design fields in Taiwan paid scant attention on this subject. Thus this paper starts with investigating the present situation of design ethics education in Taiwan and then proposes suggestions for improvement. Literature reviews first look into related researches and discussions from the subject areas of Ethics, Education, and Design to clarify relevant issues and concepts, and thus establish the research focus on the content and method of teaching design ethics. Two investigations on current status of design ethics education in Taiwan were then conducted. One is to identify the scope and content of ethics components in the curricula of regular 4-year undergraduate design programs in Taiwan from investigating the syllabi of ethics-related courses to get an overview of what and how does the ethics education teach student in the design discipline in universities. The other one is to explore design undergraduates’ opinions regarding ethical design standards, and how associated factors affect the ethical attitudes of students. Sequentially, a proposal for teaching design ethics is proposed based on previous research results. The proposal proposes a structural ethical content and three cases which discuss ethical issues in design practices in three aspects, legal regulation, social support, and workplace, for teaching design ethics and then evaluates the applicability by in-depth teacher interview and teaching practice. The implications for design ethics education in Taiwan from the results are discussed and recommendations for the future development of design ethics education, relevant stakeholders and further research are then proposed.
