The emergency medical technicians suffer lots of stress from diverse sources. It is important to understand their sources of working stress, professional commitment, job satisfaction and the relationships. This was a cross-sectional research design. All emergency medical technicians who worked in the Taichung City Fire Department were surveyed. Valid samples were 307. A questionnaire was used to investigate their working stress, professional commitment, and job satisfaction. Also the relationships of personal demographics and working characteristics with the working stress, professional commitment and job satisfaction. The results are as follows. (1) There are statistically significant correlations between working stress, professional commitment, and job satisfaction. (2) The lower the degree of working stress, the higher the degree of professional commitment and job satisfaction. (3) The higher the degree of professional commitment, the higher the degree of job satisfaction. (4) Patient care and workload were major sources of working stress. (5) The emergency medical technicians who were female, older, higher seniority, feeling more embarrassed about standby for disaster relief and rescue perceived higher working stress. (6) The emergency medical technicians who were unmarried, lower seniority, had higher numbers of unit-ambulance-attendance per month, feeling less embarrassed about standby for disaster relief and rescue had higher professional commitment. (7) The emergency medical technicians who were older, married, feeling less embarrassed about standby for disaster relief and rescue had higher work satisfaction. The results of this study make us more understand about the working stress, professional commitment, and job satisfaction of the emergency medical technicians, and can be a reference for future policy making or enhancement solutions.
