Although the Ministry of Education has vigorously encouraged students to form a habit of taking exercise since 2000, the survey conducted by the Child Welfare League Foundation in 2012 showed no obvious improvement in such a habit for schoolchildren. This study suggests that to let students take the initiative to do exercise, it is necessary to understand how to construct the sports environment and playgrounds that satisfies students’ needs from their perspectives. We also should investigate current problems in the facilities of sports fields and the troubles besetting students. Furthermore, the study explores how to provide such sports fields and environments that attract and satisfy school kids through planning and improvement, which is the first step to encourage the students in developing exercise habits. Using the Post-occupancy Evaluation (POE), this study conducted a survey on students of Jiangcui Elementary School in New Taipei City to understand students’ degree of satisfaction with sports fields and the problems in and demand for the current sports grounds. The results showed that students’ overall evaluation on the sport fields in Jiangcui Elementary School in New Taipei City was lower than ordinary (3 points), indicating that they thought there was still opportunity for improvement. It is also found that nearly half of the schoolchildren seldom took exercise in the sport fields after class, which might indicated a lack of exercise. Further analysis of background variables led to a finding that gender and age also affected schoolchildren’s evaluation on sports fields. Girls liked basketball court, and boys attached great importance to sports fields’ interest and convenience. Senior students preferred indoor courts, and the junior liked outdoor ones the more. Senior valued challenging sports fields, and the junior valued the interesting and natural ones. This study recommends taking students’ demands and opinions into consideration during the planning stage, focusing on the differences in demands due to different ages and genders so as to improve students’ low evaluation on sports fields. In addition, problems facing students in sports fields should be solved as soon as possible to improve their satisfaction. Such recommendations proposed by this study on the facilities of sport fields can serve as references for future improvement in such facilities and construction of new buildings in other schools.
