In recent years, P. acnes is recognized as a pathogen of acne vulgaris and plays an important role in inflammatory acne lesion pathogenesis. Therefore, to treat inflammatory acnes, one of our targets is to inhibit P. acnes. In this research, the aqueous and ethanol extracts of different parts of Lonicera japonica were concentrated and freeze dried to give residues. We discovered that compared with other parts of L. japonica, the ethanol extract of blades was more effective to inhibit DPPH, beta-carotene, and 5-lipoxygenase than its standard alpha-bisabolol, especially. We also noticed that L. japonica was effective to inhibit the growth of P. acnes. Ethanol extracts of flowers and stalks were bacteriostatic in low concentration, and extract of flowers was disinfectant at 20 mg/ml. Besides, ethanol extract of blades was the best inhibitor to P. acnes lipase when IC50 was 4.82±0.57 mg/ml, and ethanol extract of flowers was the best inhibitor to Candida rugosa lipase when IC50 was 4.76±0.41 mg/ml. Finally, extract of L. japonica elevated tyrosinase activity and had appropriate absorption value at a wavelength of 320-400 nm (UVA) and 280-320 nm (UVB). In conclusion, from previous results we confirmed the ability of L. japonica to anti-inflammation, its multi-function, and potential in application of cosmetics.
