In order to increase the surface sizing efficacy of SAE, better anchoring of the agent is probably warranted. Thus we have investigated the effect of adding aluminum sulfate (alum) with SAE in the lab on the surface sizing performance. The experimental design has set aluminum sulfate addition sequence and dose variables at 1.6%, 2.4% and 3.2% levels in conjunction with a 4.0% SAE surface sizing agent dose to evaluate the effects of alum on SAE water resistance and water absorption performance. The experimental procedure has confirmed that adding alum helped with SAE sizing degree, and there were significant increases in water resistance of the sized paper. Compared to the 42.5 s of the control sample, the three treatment levels showed increases of 94% to 253%; as with respect to the sequence of addition, simultaneous addition of alum with SAE produced the best efficacy. As to the water absorbance of sized paper, simultaneous addition of alum and SAE showed significant effects, with water absorption decreased from 22.3% to 42.3%; and alum doses of 2.4% and 3.2% were optimal. However, the dose range might require adjustment depending on the actual conditions, because alum dose vs. sizing degree showed proportionality only at a certain range. At a constant sizing agent dose, excessive alum could affect the sizing degree of the sizing agent and starch solution, causing adverse results. In conclusion, SAE surface sizing agent added together with aluminum sulfate can effectively increase sizing performance. Addition of a relatively cheap aluminum sulfate to enhance sizing efficacy or reducing surface sizing agent dose, which in turn could reduce the doses of internal wet end chemicals, allowing for both reduced impact on white water system and reducing the overall cost of chemicals. 彭元興 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 36 zh-TW
